Guide – Endowment Mortgages
Of all the mortgage types available, endowment mortgages have attracted the most controversy in recent years. Rather than repaying the loan, monthly instalments are paid into an endowment policy. It is hoped that this will grow sufficiently to repay the capital of the mortgage at the end of the term.
However, millions of endowments have failed to perform as promised, leaving policy holders with thousands of pounds of debt to pay off at the end of the term. As a result, many people have made successful claims against lenders for mis-selling endowment mortgages.
Since the endowment mortgage boom of the 1980s, however, regulations have been tightened and many endowment mortgages offer some form of guarantee that the mortgage will be repaid at the end of the term.
Like any investment on the stock market, an endowment mortgage can offer handsome rewards, but there is a risk that the investment will fail to perform. Now that the market is regulated more tightly, endowment mortgages can offer an attractive alternative to repayment and offset mortgages.
